In further efforts to combat the escalating spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa, on 23 March 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a 21-day national lockdown from midnight, 26 March until midnight, 16 April 2020. In compliance to this new directive, the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) has suspended all premises-based operations until midnight on Thursday, 16 April 2020. “At this time, we stand together with the rest of South Africa, our continent and the world in doing everything we can to slow the spread of Coronavirus, and to ensure that our healthcare systems are not overburdened. We applaud President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decisive measures, which are meant to protect the lives of the people of South Africa,” says Taubie Motlhabane, CEO of the CTICC.” While we will physically not be in our offices during this period, we are continuing to work remotely and remain available to our clients via various digital methods of communication. “We look forward to helping with long-range planning as well as preparation for events that will be held as soon as restrictions are lifted,” says Motlhabane. “For now, keep well, stay safe and stay home,” she concluded. Covid-19 Update
Following the National Disaster declaration around COVID-19 by the President on Sunday, 15th March 2020, the Department of Health has advised of certain protocols to be followed to minimise the spread of the Coronavirus. The CTICC has been informed through a tracing process that certain staff members have been exposed to individuals who have had close contact with patients that have tested positive for the Coronavirus. The individuals that the staff members have been in contact with have gone into self-isolation and are following the advice of health authorities. In an effort to flatten the curve and slow the spread of the virus, we have made the decision to take precautionary measures by temporarily closing the CTICC for a minimum period of 14 days. This will allow our entire team to self-isolate while continuing to work from home. This is a measure to protect and preserve our most valuable asset, our staff. During this self-isolation period, staff will monitor themselves for any symptoms and report such to medical practitioners. We have equipped our staff with the relevant resources and information around how to self-isolate, which symptoms to look for and most importantly, all preventative measures that they should put in place. The CTICC believes this measure is the responsible thing to do. “Our priority will always be the safety of our staff, clients and partners,” said Taubie Motlhabane, CEO of the CTICC. Due to the restriction of hosting events of more than 100 attendees, the CTICC does not have any scheduled events in the next 14 days; therefore, this precautionary closure does not affect any clients at the moment. We will continue to reassess the situation and adjust as operationally necessary. “Of course, we regret the impact that the temporary closure of the CTICC will have on our suppliers, but we believe it is prudent to be cautious under the current world-reality,” Motlhabane said. The CTICC is committed to using this time to investigate new ways of doing business by engaging and working with our clients and colleagues. We believe it is important to develop long term resilience strategies so that we are ready to open our doors to the world again and play our part in growing the economy as soon as possible. Covid-19 Update
The CTICC has noted the announcement made by South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa on measures to help mitigate the impact and spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). A concise disaster management plan is being set out by the national government, with various mechanisms implemented as a result. The two which directly impact the centre’s business include the prohibition of all gatherings over 100 people and restrictions on international and national travel. Taubie Motlhabane, CEO of the Cape Town International Convention Centre, confirmed the CTICC’s commitment to aligning with the evolving global, national and local protocols established to help prevent and minimise the impact of the virus. “As the potential impact on the spread of COVID-19 continues to unfold, it is incumbent upon all of us to play our part in containing the spread of the virus. The health and safety of our employees, clients and partners remains our number one priority. The CTICC will continue to implement all recommendations outlined by the emergency and rapid response systems set up by the national government as the situation evolves.” “Our business’s core focus is the hosting of large gatherings. We, therefore, share in the challenges that event-size and travel restrictions have on the meeting industry around the world. We also appreciate the severe economic impact that cancelling or postponing an event has on event organisers, suppliers, and delegates. As we all adapt to this new world reality, we need to take this opportunity to investigate how we can all diversify our businesses, and work with our clients and colleagues in developing strategies for the long term resilience of the meeting industry.” For the latest information, please find alerts and updates here: National Institute of Communicable Diseases Discover Cape Town World Health Organisation Western Cape Health Department
Covid-19 update
In the wake of recent developments and updates on the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the CTICC remains fully aligned with the proactive global, national and local protocols established to help prevent and minimise the spread and impact of the virus. Taubie Motlhabane, CEO of the Cape Town International Convention Centre, confirmed that the CTICC is taking all precautions to ensure the safety of delegates. “As a business, we face the same challenges as our global counterparts, and we have unfortunately also been affected by event cancellations and postponements. We also understand the anxiety with which event organisers, suppliers and delegates have, following reports of the spread of COVID-19.” The centre already has an in-house medical response service provider, ER24, which has a well-rehearsed plan, and are trained in COVID-19 response protocols. These protocols have been further augmented by enhanced cleaning procedures which includes the deployment of more cleaning staff to facilitate the systematic disinfecting of all surfaces exposed to regular touch every 12-hours, supplemented by the hourly sanitising of these surfaces. The CTICC has also provided hand sanitisers throughout the facilities restrooms alongside preventative communication and will provide touchless hand sanitiser at buffet stations for events.
