Meet Faizel Cloete, Building Automation Technician

With nearly a decade of service at the CTICC, Faizel Cloete has become a cornerstone of the Safety & Security Department. As a Building Automation Technician, Faizel combines decades of technical expertise with a deep respect for people and processes. His journey from a lifelong passion for electronics to a fulfilling career at the CTICC is one of dedication, craftsmanship, and continuous learning.

Q: Please share a bit about your background. We’d love to hear about where you’re from and the journey that brought you to the CTICC.
I dedicated the majority of my career to Telkom, where I built a strong foundation in electronics — an area that began as a passion and hobby, and grew into more than 30 years of professional experience. I value the lessons I learned during this time, always treating colleagues as mentors and drawing positive insights from each interaction, regardless of their position.
Alongside my technical background, I have a personal passion for woodwork, which created an opportunity for me to join the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Initially, I was contracted as a Project Coordinator to oversee the replacement of the wooden panels in the gallery area of CTICC 1. I was also part of the project team responsible for the landmark CTICC 2 development.
Following these projects, I successfully applied for my current role, where I continue to grow both professionally and personally. My journey, shaped by years of experience, continuous learning, and meaningful interactions with people, has equipped me with the skills and resilience to add value in every role I undertake.

Q: How long have you been an employee at the CTICC?
Since 1 October 2015 — this year marks my 10th anniversary.

Q: What does a typical day in your role look like?
My day involves planning and collaborating with our Health and Safety team for current and upcoming events, identifying potential challenges, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

Q: What inspired you to take up a career in this field?
My hobby in electronics paved the way for a lifelong profession. It’s something I’ve always been deeply curious about and find great enjoyment in. This passion-driven approach meant that my work never felt like a job — it’s a craft that allows me to continuously learn, innovate, and adapt to new technologies. Over time, this dedication has shaped my technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and ability to mentor others. The same applies to my interest in woodwork, where my attention to detail and appreciation for craftsmanship continue to inspire my work.

Q: Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your time at the CTICC?
Completing my Health and Safety course was a major milestone in both my professional and personal growth. It demanded focus, discipline, and effort to master regulations, risk management strategies, and compliance requirements. The experience challenged me to think critically about workplace hazards and the responsibility that comes with ensuring others’ safety. Passing the course gave me a strong sense of accomplishment because it wasn’t just about studying — it was about applying that knowledge in real-life situations.

Q: What do you find most rewarding within your role?
My ongoing commitment to personal development and creating safe, compliant, and supportive environments — both at work and in the community. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my work helps protect others while also strengthening my own confidence and skills.

Q: Who inspires you and why?
Life itself inspires me. Life lessons are quiet teachers that shape who we become. I believe in drawing meaning from both struggles and successes, allowing those experiences to guide me forward.

Q: Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies or interests?
I enjoy recreational angling and hiking. Both allow me to connect with nature, unwind, and reflect.

Q: What goals or aspirations do you have for your future within the company?
Over the next 10 years, I hope to continue growing and take on a role where I can inspire others and share the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my career.

Q: What is your favourite part of your job or the CTICC?
My colleagues — I treat them like family. We support one another and work together to achieve common goals.

Q: Which company value is most important to you and why?
Respect. It shapes how we treat others and ultimately reflects back on us. It’s not just about politeness or manners — it’s about recognizing the worth, dignity, and humanity in every person, including ourselves.
