The CTICC is committed to reducing the impact of waste on the environment, which is generated as part of the events and exhibitions we host.
The CTICC has produced 15% more waste this year but longer and more waste-productive events have not significantly improved our waste diversion. Stands, particularly at our exhibitions and trade fairs, can lead to significant post-event waste. But this remains an upcycling opportunity, as described above on page XX.
During the period under review a total of 372.7 metric tonnes of waste was sent to landfill, with 496.5 metric tonnes of recyclables diverted from landfill. This equates to a 57% diversion of waste from landfill, up 2% on the previous year, but still short of our 75% diversion target. Improving this figure will be our focus in the coming year.
The amount diverted from landfill was influenced by the nature of events hosted during the year under review, which generated a waste profile that included difficult-to-recycle materials such as custom-built stands made from composite and MDF wood. Looking ahead, the CTICC has prioritised identifying circular infrastructure solutions to better manage and repurpose these types of materials in future.
